Absence of Malice

In Absence of Malice, Megan Carter publishes a story about Peter Gallagher, a liquor distributor and son of a deceased mob boss. Her source? A folder she found on a federal prosecutor's desk. As the news broke, Gallagher began to feel the pressure of being wrongly accused of murder, such as having his company shut down. She later finds out that Gallagher was innocent and prints a story stating this. Unfortunately, her proof was that Gallagher had gone with a Catholic school principal to get an abortion, who ended up killing herself due to the defamation. After forgiving her, Gallagher began seeing Carter. Together, they successfully played the D.A. who was illegally investigating Gallagher. In the end, the lies were gone and the public found the truth

Ten Things I Learned About Journalism

1. Check, double check, and triple check your sources.
2. If someone wants something off of the record, keep it that way.
3. Do not get into a relationship with someone you had just accused of being a killer.
4. Reporting takes place in the field, not behind a desk.
5. Not providing every side to a story usually leaves some part of it out.
6. There are effects from every story written, even small ones.
7. If you have a lead, follow it.
8. The moment the paper hits the stands, it's too late.
9. Don't use the press as a weapon
10. Be aware of the dangers that printing a story could have to you.

Radio Fun

I listened to 107.5 on Wednesday at 6 AM and 1 PM over spring break. This is a Greensboro Top 40 station. Unfortunately, I did not go anywhere over spring break and I live in the boondocks, so this is the best I could do.  I found it odd how different the commercials were in the morning and afternoon. I did try to find an AM station from far away, but I could not. Note: something weird happened with the spacing when I took it from Word to blogger.

The Story of Dick Gordon

I found his particular style to be very interesting. First off, he has a unique voice that carries the story along. He asks powerful, pertinent questions which truly add to the amount of information learned by the listener. The editing is concise, with sound effects that help the listener feel as though they are right there. In "The Courage to Coach," Coach Nolan Richardson talks about how he had to overcome racial discrimination while leading his basketball team. I think its also interesting that Gordon picks stories about individuals which encompass much bigger social issues.

My Own Movie

If I were to adapt a book into a movie, I'd pick World War Z. It has an incredible story that is begging to be put on screen. There is a vast number of characters in this book and thus, I'd hire a cast all unknowns so as to increase the realism of the film. Classical music would be best for this film to give it a serious vibe. I feel like it wouldn't be too tough to make it two hours, but I'd probably have remove one or two of the interviews. For a summary, I'd say "This is the story of a zombie attack, from outbreak to abolition. It is also the story of people and how their lives are affected by these zombies."

Intro! (Section 001)

What up! The name is Jimmy Branley and the age is 19. I'm a freshman from Elon, NC and I know I want to do journalism, but not which sequence. This is why I'm in this class, and I can already tell that it's helping. I know that my main source of media is through the internet. I am really into both hip hop and movies, so the Internet provides the most direct way for me to get the scoop on the latest developments. On top of that, I'm a nerd so I love video games.
